Design and display

At first glance, all these watches look the same and share the same round design. On top of that, the material used to build these watches is also the same, i.e., plastic, but it’s not good to call it plastic, so now it’s a fibre-reinforced polymer case. The only slight difference is that Forerunner 945 and 745 use Corning Gorilla Glass DX lens, whereas Forerunner 245 uses Corning Gorilla Glass 3 lens.

By no surprise, Garmin uses the same 1.2-inch MIP display and 240 x 240 pixels screen in all three watches, but it’s hard to spot any difference, and none of them is touchscreen, so it has 5 buttons to navigate and do everything with just the buttons.

But if we talk about weight, then the Forerunner 945 weighs the heaviest at 50 grams and measures 47 x 47 x 13.7 mm; the 745 comes in second. Weighs 47 grams and measures 43.8 x 43.8 x 13.3 mm, and lastly, the Forerunner 245 is the lightest at 38.5 grams and measures 42.3 x 42.3 x 12.2.

Forerunner 245 vs. 745 vs. 945: Features

Let me clarify one thing: I’ll cover the important features that these watches have that users use significantly, because even if I want to mention all the features, it will take weeks to complete.

Now the Forerunner 745 and 945 features are identical; there are no changes whatsoever. But 245 is a little bit behind, but I can’t complain because both 745 and 945 cost more.

Here is a list of features for the Forerunner 745 and 945.

VO2 max estimation

Training status evaluation

24/7 heart rate monitoring

All-day stress monitoring (body battery)

Blood oxygen sensor (Pulse Ox)

Smart notifications

Weather updates

Calories burned

Respiration

On-board music storage (e.g., Spotify offline)

You don’t get music support in Forerunner 245; for that, you have to buy the Forerunner 245 Music version, which is also available at the Garmin store. Other than that, all the listed features are available on all three watches, which is good.

Activity Tracking

You don’t really see a change in this section either. All three watches have GPS support, signal pretty swiftly, and don’t drop it either. You also get the three satellite systems: GPS, Glonass, and Galileo.

The GPS tracking is pretty accurate too; you can sprint, change trails, and go off-road, and all three are capable of capturing activity accurately. On the map view via the Garmin Connect App, you can even see the pattern you are running, so no problem here.

The heart rate readings are also accurate on all three watches. All use the same optical sensor for heart rate monitoring, and for wrist-based devices, it is accurate. If you want more accurate heart rate readings or a lactate threshold test, you need to spend some extra bucks to buy either the Garmin HRM-Run or HRM Pro heart rate straps, which both work the same and cost $150.

Battery Life

Now here we see a slight difference between the battery lives of these watches. On the Forerunner 245, you’ll get up to 7 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 24 hours in GPS mode.

On the Forerunner 745, you’ll get less battery than the 245, which has 7 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and only 16 hours in GPS mode.

You’ll get the best battery life in the Forerunner 945 in smartwatch mode; it can last up to 2 weeks and 36 hours of battery life in GPS mode, which is more than the Forerunner 245 and 745. Pretty insane, right?

Verdict

If we talk about the features, build quality, and precise sensors, then the Forerunner 945 wins by a good margin. It has every feature that you get on the other two, and the price is reasonable too.

The Forerunner 945 and 745 feature everything you can’t recognise which one is which, but the battery life in the Forerunner 745 is also less, and the price too.

If you want every feature with better battery life, then go for the Garmin Forerunner 945, but if you don’t care about battery life and don’t want to spend $600 on the watch, then go for the 745, which you can get for $100 less.

If your budget is tight or you can only spend half the price of the other two options with all the necessary features, then the Garmin Forerunner 245 will be a better choice for you.
